MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team deploys Autonomy Technology
Autonomy Software Gives MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Competitive Advantage
Autonomy Corporation, an HP Company, today announced that its revolutionary technology, capable of processing unstructured data, is to be used by the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team, providing drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg with a new means to gain critical, competitive advantage.
MERCEDES GP PETRONAS will use Autonomy's world-leading Rich Media Management and Intelligent Video Analytics technology, Autonomy Virage, to analyze racing footage. Powered by Autonomy's Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL), Virage is capable of spotting patterns in rich media information, and is used in various applications, such as for making television content fully searchable and managing complex security systems.
A new application of Virage has now been developed for MERCEDES GP PETRONAS to allow it to analyze live broadcasts of Formula One racing, providing the team with instant access to key footage. Prior to this technology, relevant video information was manually indexed, which was a slow and error-prone process. Autonomy Virage automates this process, using the single IDOL platform to understand and process all digital information, and identify individual cars and drivers based on race and on-board car footage, without any manual input.
The application provides dynamic advantages to the team and its drivers in real time at the track, providing a strategic advantage. It will be used by MERCEDES GP PETRONAS to improve performance by reviewing how other cars have raced. For example, Autonomy Virage can automatically identify on-board footage of cars as they drive sections of the circuit. This footage will be available to the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS drivers as the action unfolds, enabling them to study their competitors.
In a fast-paced, sporting environment where fractions of a second can represent the difference between pole position and a mid-field grid slot, Autonomy Virage provides MERCEDES GP PETRONAS with an invaluable asset, leveraging Autonomy's meaning-based technology to innovatively optimize performance on track.
"Formula One is a technology-driven industry, and our partnership with Autonomy allows us to lead the pack in this field, by doing it better and faster," commented Nick Fry, Chief Executive, MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team. "The ability to analyze video to this level, in real time, is game-changing for the team and will become important to our on-track strategy."
"We are delighted that Autonomy's Virage technology sees its latest application in the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team," said James Murray, VP of Autonomy Promote Solutions EMEA. "We are confident that Virage will be able to provide the team with a crucial, competitive advantage during the next Formula One season."
