Mindspeed Extends GPON and GEPON Leadership with Next-Generation Optical Networking Unit Burst-Mode Driver Solution
Mindspeed Technologies announced the latest addition to its burst-made laser drivers for optical networking units (ONUs) that deliver fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) multi-play services via fiber-access networks using Gigabit Ethernet passive optical network (GEPON) and Gigabit PON (GPON) technology. The highly integrated solution features power-saving sleep and current reduction modes and supports data rates to 3.1Gbps in a small 4x4 mm package.
"The M02099 family of burst-mode laser driver chipsets builds on the feature set of our widely deployed M02090 and M02098 drivers, including lower power dual-closed-loop EyeMinder technology that delivers real-time monitoring and compensation for laser aging and temperature effects," said Gary Shah, vice president of product marketing, high performance analog (HPA) at Mindspeed. "As with its predecessors, the M02099 chipset family can be used in traditional modules and is also ideal for system designs that reduce bill-of-materials (BOM) costs by mounting optical subassemblies directly on the ONU board."
Mindspeed will be demonstrating the M02099 chipset family and its end-to-end GPON, GEPON, 10G-GPON/EPON solutions at The Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC 2012), March 6-8, 2012, in booth #1761/1763 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Technical Features
Mindspeed's M02099 family of chipsets features a programmable burst-mode laser driver integrated with a continuous-mode limiting amplifier. The M02100 driver also includes on-chip electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) for storing calibration constants and performance settings, and can support more than one million write cycles. In addition to operating without external control, the devices also may operate under the control of an external microcontroller or media access control (MAC) device.
The M02099 chipset family delivers 3.1Gbps data rates for both transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) operations with isolated power pins and independent shutdown. The device offers integrated Tx Signal Detect (TX-SD), Rogue ONU detection and robust Tx burst-mode power monitoring. Its limiting amplifier can support better than 5mV input sensitivity at 3.1Gbps with selectable gain and bandwidth settings.
Availability
The M02099 family of burst-mode ONU drivers is available now and supplied in a 4x4 mm quad-flat no-leads (QFN) package. The chipsets can be used in GPON and GEPON FTTx small form factor (SFF) or small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver modules, or single board ONU/ONT designs with bidirectional optical subassembly (BOSA)-on-board optics.
