Iowa State University's VRAC Turns to InterSense Wireless Motion Tracking System
InterSense's IS-900 Wireless Technology Provides Precision Tracking for Realistic Interaction With the World's Highest Resolution Six-Sided Immersive Display: InterSense, Inc., a market leader in precision motion tracking technology, today announced its custom configured, IS-900 wireless motion tracking system has been seamlessly integrated into the C6, a six-sided virtual reality room at Iowa State University's Virtual Reality Applications Center (VRAC). VRAC is an interdisciplinary research center focusing on the rapidly expanding interface between humans and computers, with research projects spanning science, engineering and the humanities. Installed as part of an upgrade of the C6 by Mechdyne Corporation, one of InterSense's key value added resellers, the grand opening of the upgraded facility is taking place April 25-27, 2007, at Iowa State University's Emerging Technologies Conference 2007.
InterSense's IS-900 wireless system in the C6 enables the real-time tracking of users' movements as they interact with virtual 3-D images displayed on the walls of the room. This is accomplished via the InterSense wireless head tracker, which updates the C6's visualization software with precise, smooth measurements of the user's viewpoint, and a wireless wand input device, which enables the user to navigate through the environment with six degrees of freedom while intuitively interacting with the scene.
The six walls of the C6 display over 100 million pixels of interactive, stereo imagery producing detail and realism never before experienced in a surround screen virtual environment. The precise and smooth tracking provided by InterSense's IS-900 system provides users with the fine level of detail required to interact with 3-D virtual objects in this environment. Furthermore, the custom configuration allows for a seamless integration of the components into the display while maintaining uniform performance throughout the entire environment.
"With InterSense's IS-900 tracking solution for the C6, we no longer have jitter or latency issues, and the inertial sensing technology eliminates the need for us to recalibrate the system each time a metallic object is introduced into the room," stated James Oliver, the director of Iowa State's Virtual Reality Applications Center and a professor of mechanical engineering. "As a result, our researchers are able to more efficiently complete their research projects because of the realistic, seamless interaction with the virtual objects displayed."
"Academic research facilities such as Iowa State's Virtual Reality Applications Center are forging ahead with cutting edge research, capitalizing on the latest technology to create state of the art immersive displays," stated Kurt Hoffmeister, vice president of engineering and product development at Mechdyne. "Through our strong, long-standing partnership, we're happy to bring InterSense's flexible and robust motion tracking system to the VRAC."
The VRAC installation at Iowa State marks the third installation of InterSense's six-sided display solution, further proving the IS-900 is an ideal system for such complex, data-intensive situations. InterSense has also successfully installed motion tracking systems within six-sided immersive visualization environments at Duke University (The Visroom's "C") and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Beckman Institute Cube).
"The upgraded C6 is a tremendous system that will truly drive innovations in research through immersive viewing," stated Mike Donfrancesco, vice president of sales at InterSense. "We are proud to be a part of the VRAC, providing Iowa State with an advanced tracking solution for this unique immersive environment."
Introduced in 1999, InterSense's IS-900 motion tracking product family is an enabling technology used in flight simulation, mission training systems, oil and gas exploration, 3-D visualization rooms and other immersive display applications. With more than 1,000 systems installed worldwide, the IS-900 product offers reliable and accurate motion tracking for the most demanding applications.
