ModViz Announces Shell Oil as a Virtual Graphics Platform Customer
Following an extensive evaluation process, Shell International's Exploration and Production Division in Houston, Texas, has licensed ModViz's Virtual Graphics Platform (VGP) to accelerate their 3D seismic interpretation application 123DI. ModViz's VGP software allows OpenGL-based applications such as Shell's 123DI to leverage multiple graphic processors in a single workstation or across a cluster of multiple workstations to dramatically increase 3D graphic performance and accelerate workflow. 123DI is utilized throughout Shell on the desktop, in collaboration sessions or "Team Rooms" and in the Visualization Centers. The latter facilities enable multiple geophysicists and their managers to view, discuss and make collaborative decisions about reservoirs or prospects. "Shell is continuing to investigate ways of delivering the benefits of VGP technology to its 123DI user base," said Richard Thomas, Vice President Sales at ModViz. "We are working closely with Shell to improve the business value of VGP in their seismic interpretation process. We believe that VGP has a significant potential to boost the interpretation throughput for 123DI users throughout Shell."
"The seismic interpretation requirements of geophysicists, coupled with the financial impact of quality decisions and often very short cycle times, produce some of the most demanding 3D visualization needs in any industry. This is precisely why our VGP technology has attracted so much attention in the Oil and Gas Industry. We enable application users to interact with much larger 3D data sets than ever before, without the need for data pre-processing or simplification. It's also why we are so excited to be working with the professionals at Shell E&P," said Tom Coull, Chief Executive Officer at ModViz.
