Oracle Announces Oracle9i Production Support for Itanium
ORACLEWORLD 2002, SAN FRANCISCO, -- Oracle Corp. today announced the first production release of a commercially available database designed for the Intel(R) Itanium(R) processor family, with proven performance. Oracle9i Database on Itanium 2-based systems running HP-UX will be generally available by the end of the year. Additionally, Oracle is announcing Oracle9i Application Server Release 2 Developer's Preview for Microsoft Windows on Itanium 2-based systems, which is now downloadable for 64-bit Windows from the Oracle Technology Network.
Oracle has experienced significant interest from the developer and business community with a record of 2,500 downloads in the last 90 days from Oracle Technology Network for developer releases of Oracle9i Database on Linux, HP-UX and Windows for Itanium 2-based systems. Oracle has had a beta program for Oracle9i Database on Microsoft Windows .NET 64-bit Edition running since July 2002. Production availability for Oracle9i Database on Linux and Windows for Itanium 2-based systems is expected early 2003.
"The Oracle9i Database running on HP's Itanium 2-based server gives us an affordable, stable and scalable platform for data access with computing capabilities that could not be matched with current technology. By removing computing constraints, we foresee streamlining our workflow. Our vision is to maximize the benefits of IT and therefore be at the cutting edge of technology," said Olafur Adalsteinsson, IT Manager at Landspitali University Hospital. "The availability of Oracle9i Database on Itanium 2-based systems demonstrates that this technology is moving mainstream. We believe now is the time to get a jump start with Itanium 2 processors."
"Fiat sees the Itanium Processor Family as the strategic way forward especially for our backend databases. We have therefore bought Itanium 2-based systems from HP with Oracle9i Real Application Clusters. We are planning to go into production soon after Oracle production releases are available," said Claudio San Pedro, general manager of Fiat in Spain.
Oracle continues to show leadership and innovation in providing companies with enterprise software based on the cost-effective Intel Itanium 2 processor. HP, a strategic Itanium 2-based development platform provider for Oracle, has supported Oracle in delivering Oracle9i Database for Itanium 2-based systems to the market in record speed. Through combined expertise with a broad range of architectures, operating systems and support for Itanium 2 processors, mutual Oracle and HP customers reap the benefits of an optimized platform.
"We are proud to have been able to contribute to the production release of Oracle9i Database on Itanium 2-based systems with our software enabling efforts," said William Swope, co-general manager of Software and Solutions at Intel. "This release marks an important milestone for the industry. The strength of Oracle9i Database and Itanium 2-based systems allows outstanding performance, reliability, and scalability for enterprise deployments."
"HP is pleased that Oracle is supporting our Itanium-based servers with the first available commercial database for the Itanium processor family," said Mark Hudson, vice president, Marketing, Business Critical Systems Group, HP. "Our enterprise customers will not only benefit from the breakthrough performance and scalability at the low cost of our Itanium 2-based solutions, but will also benefit from the performance, scalability, reliability and availability of Oracle9i Database."
