Quantum|ATL Verifies Remote Replication of Data Using Cisco iSCSI Router
IRVINE, CA -- Quantum|ATL, a subsidiary of Quantum Corporation (NYSE:DSS) and a leading supplier of intelligent tape automation products for networked computers, today announced verification of the remote replication of data using the Cisco SN 5420 Storage Router with Quantum|ATL P-Series libraries, the storage industry's first bridge between Fibre Channel-based tape libraries and iSCSI-based tape libraries. The Cisco SN 5420 Storage Router, the first commercially available iSCSI networking device, provides universal access to storage over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, allowing users to have direct access to storage anywhere on the network. In live tests conducted by Quantum|ATL, a Cisco SN 5420 was used to send data from a Fibre Channel storage area network (SAN) across the Internet to a remote P-Series library connected to another Fibre Channel SAN.
"This technology accelerates the migration from direct attached storage to networked storage, effectively merges Fibre Channel and iSCSI-based storage devices into one architecture, and enables the consolidation, sharing and access of storage over open, standards-based networks," said Paul Messier, vice president of software and systems engineering for Quantum|ATL.
The storage over IP framework allows users to retain their existing Fibre Channel infrastructure while using the networking standards of IP for the networking component. The open-standards based Cisco SN 5420 Storage Router enables Quantum|ATL Fibre Channel libraries to transparently connect to IP networks, providing customers the ability to transition to end-to-end native IP storage area networks. The technology extends the reach of network storage beyond the capabilities of Fibre Channel, reducing administrative and network costs while improving capacity for disaster recovery, data replication and storage consolidation.
"With the advent of e-commerce, e-learning and workforce collaboration, storage networking has emerged as a business critical networked application," said Mark Cree, general manager of the Storage Router Business Unit at Cisco. "Working with Quantum|ATL and other industry partners, Cisco is continuing to address the need to improve data availability and integrity while reducing the total cost of ownership for storage."
