SGI Expands Developer Program to Linux Community
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., -- Today at LinuxWorld, SGI announced it has expanded its developer program to include Linux(R) operating system developers to complement the company's launch of the SGI(R) Altix(TM) 3000 system, a Linux OS-based high-performance computing system. This is a natural extension of the SGI(R) Global Developer Program with its emphasis and focus on the MIPS(R) processor and IRIX(R) OS. The SGI Global Developer Program educates and enables developers to leverage SGI(R) NUMAflex(TM) technology-advanced system architecture common to both Linux OS-based and IRIX OS-based SGI(R) platforms-which provides unmatched system scalability and flexibility by pooling memory for all of a given system's processors. With this dual-platform strategy, SGI is leveraging its proprietary solutions and integrating them with the Linux platform to make them available to customers and developers interested in exploring, developing and implementing advanced Linux solutions.
SGI's focus on Linux development has three primary aspects: enhancing Linux through open-source contributions, providing leading-edge developer tools and expanding SGI's industry-leading high-performance computing solutions to include Linux. With this program, SGI further establishes its strategy to aggressively target Linux developers with a complete suite of tools and support to encourage them to make their new offerings available on the optimized SGI platform.
"The SGI Global Developer Program is instrumental in enabling developers to provide breakthrough software solutions for MIPS processor-based systems running the IRIX OS and now the SGI system based on Intel processors and running Linux," said Anneke Dempsey, director, Global Alliances. "Developers can leverage the advanced Linux development environment for SGI Altix 3000 to create robust solutions that scale beyond what is available on any other platform."
Key Ingredients for Success
SGI has long been a supporter of the open-source community and is committed to evolving the scalability, performance and reliability of Linux. SGI focuses on Linux development in three primary areas:
Enhancing Linux through open-source contributions: The following are just a few of the open-source projects that have originated with SGI, have SGI personnel coordinating their development and maintaining their master trees, or have SGI personnel as significant core contributors.
-- Filesystem and storage: SGI FailSafe(TM) for Linux, XFS(TM)
high-performance journaling filesystem, and file alteration monitor
and Inode monitor
-- Graphics: OpenGL Performer(TM) for Linux, GLX(TM) and OpenGL(R) API
extensions to X, the OpenGL sample implementation for a cross-platform
3D and 2D graphics API, and Open Inventor(TM) object-oriented toolkit
for interactive 3D graphics
-- Linux kernel: Kernel debugger, kernel profiling, processor and memory
placement, and memory support for NUMA
Providing leading-edge developer tools:
-- SGI ProPack(TM), a new set of high-performance Linux optimizations that
enhances overall system scaling, data handling and resource management
while maintaining binary compatibility with existing 64-bit Linux
applications running on the Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 processor.
-- SGI advancements, including its NUMA architecture and its specially
tuned libraries, streamline the process of achieving massive and
reliable application scalability.
Offering the SGI high-performance computing platform:
-- SGI Altix 3000 family of servers and superclusters combining SGI
supercomputing architecture with Intel Itanium 2 processors and the
Linux operating system to shatter scalability and performance records
-- Ability to share memory across clustered nodes to vastly improve
application performance and to greatly simplify deploying and managing
a multinode system
Developer Program Momentum
Membership in the developer program has grown significantly in the past year. Currently, there are over 2,600 SGI Global Developer Program members.
According to Victoria Grey, Vice President of Information Protection, for LEGATO Systems, and SGI Developer Program member, "LEGATO Systems leads the industry in delivering complete data protection solutions for Linux. As Linux gains broader acceptance, it is an increasingly important platform for LEGATO and our strategic partners, such as SGI. We look forward to continuing our work with SGI to deliver comprehensive access, availability and protection solutions for high-performance Linux computing environments."
The progress being made with the program will culminate in the Summer 2003, when SGI will host its annual developer conference. This year, for the first time, there will be a dedicated Linux technical tract.
SGI Developer Program at Linux World
Developers are invited to visit the SGI Booth 221 Hall D, Javits Center, New York City, during the LinuxWorld show, January 22-24, to learn more about SGI and the developer program, as well as enrolling in the program right on the show floor.
SGI will further demonstrate its commitment to the Linux development community by hosting two Birds-of-a-Feather meetings at LinuxWorld: "New Breakthroughs in Linux Supercomputing," led by Paul McNamara, SGI vice president of product and platforms; and "Extreme Linux: Moving Forward, co-hosted by Jon "maddog" Hall of Linux International and McNamara.
For More Information
SGI invites all IRIX and Linux developers to join the SGI Global Developer Program as a Developer Online member. Take advantage of the Web-based service that provides vast information on development tools, techniques, and online resources, as well as some basic business development ideas.
Developers looking to additionally cultivate joint business opportunities with SGI should consider the Developer Plus membership. SGI provides members with significant development benefits and the personal touch to support joint business development activities.
