Sun Contributes Grid Engine Portal Technology to Open Source Grid Engine Project
LINUXWorld-Javitts Center--NY-- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today expands its commitment to the open development of grid computing technologies with the contribution of its Grid Engine Portal portlet technology to the open source Grid Engine Project. The portlet, which integrates Sun(tm) ONE Grid Engine software with Sun(tm) ONE Server Portal technology, helps enable commercial enterprises and research institutions to easily and securely access grid resources from virtually any location inside or outside the firewall. It can be particularly powerful in collaborative environments, providing remote team members, partners and suppliers with secure access to compute resources in a central grid. With more than 6,500 grids deployed since July 2000 based on Sun ONE Grid Engine software, Sun has been instrumental in making grid computing mainstream. In July 2001, Sun was the first systems vendor to place key grid computing technology into open source via the Grid Engine Project at http://gridengine.sunsource.net.
With today's significant contribution of integration code to the Grid Engine Project, Sun provides a Java-based capability which can help enable customers to access Internet-based applications and resources securely in grid environments powered by Sun's Grid Engine software. With the Grid Engine Portal portlet and the Sun ONE Portal Server, users can securely:
• Execute applications via a transparent interface to Grid Engine software
• Monitor job status
• Upload input files to the Grid Engine Portal with a single click
• Download output files to a local system
"Open source development is a cornerstone of Sun's grid computing vision," said Wolfgang Gentzsch, director of Grid Computing, Sun Microsystems. "As we've seen with the success of the Grid Engine open source project, bringing the Grid Engine Portal portlet to open source widens the technology's reach and will help further the adoption of grid computing as a whole."
"The Sun technical computing portal has filled a niche for OSC that has enabled us to deliver high-end computational resources in a web environment to the state's computational biology research community," said Eric Stahlberg, Senior Systems Manager, the Ohio Supercomputer Center. "The open architecture of the portal's design was a key factor that enabled OSC to integrate a number of diverse platforms, including Sun Fire 6800 systems and TimeLogic DeCypher genomic accelerators. We have also completed proof-of-concept integration for other platforms, including Cray supercomputers, and are exploring further integration with OSC Linux cluster systems."
Sun Releases Source Code for Job Applications Manager Prototype
Further extending its commitment to the open source development of grid computing tools and technologies, Sun also announced the contribution of the source code for the Jini(tm) network technology-based Jobs Applications Manager (JAM) prototype to the Grid Engine Project. Developed in collaboration with the Swiss Center for Scientific Computing, JAM technology provides a tool kit for researchers and computer scientists to experiment and explore how Jini network technology coupled with distributed resource management tools, like Sun's Grid Engine software, can be implemented to help join multiple grids seamlessly into a virtualized set of resources.
Providing a sample integration of Jini and grid technologies, Sun is demonstrating the potential synergies between the two technologies in delivering grid computing as a service and providing technical customers a tool kit which can be dissected and manipulated to work with their existing applications.
Growing Success of Open Development
In July 2001, Sun was the first systems vendor to place key grid computing technology into open source. The open source Grid Engine Project is the home for the growing Grid Engine user and developer community. Grid Engine software is a leading distributed resource management tool for cluster, enterprise and global grids. Managing and submitting jobs to available compute resources in an individual grid, Grid Engine technology maximizes access to compute resources, increases the utilization of those resources, and improves productivity and return on investment. Sponsored by Sun Microsystems, the project is at http://gridengine.sunsource.net/. Sun ONE Grid Engine software is also available as a free download at http://www.sun.com/grid . Users of Grid Engine technology include Ford, Caprion Pharmaceuticals, BP, Cognigen Corporation, Motorola, Sony Semiconductor and Devices Europe, the United Kingdom's e-science grid and Canada's National Research Council (NRC) grid.
The Sun ONE Portal Server
The portlet technology contributed to the open source project provides a customizable interface to the Sun ONE Portal Server, which is ranked both #1 in portal marketshare by The Radicati Group ("Enterprise Portals Market Trends 2002-2006") and positioned in the leader quadrant in Gartner's Portal Product Magic Quadrant for two consecutive years - 2001 and 2002. The Sun ONE Portal Server is the industry's first portal platform for building business-to-employee, business-to-business and business-to-consumer portals, and helps enable the personalized delivery of content, services, business processes and applications for enterprises competing in today's competitive environment.
The Sun ONE Portal Server is part of the Sun[tm] Open Net Environment (Sun[tm] ONE) offering - an open, integratable product portfolio to enable the development and delivery of Java[tm] Web services. More information can be found at: http://sun.com/software/products/portal_srvr.
