Second Consecutive Year, Professional BusinessWomen of California Ranks SGI in Top 25 Bay Area Companies; SGI Executives Win YWCA's Tribute to Women and Industry Awards for Fourth Consecutive Year -- Two prestigious organizations recognized the commitment of Silicon Graphics to equal opportunity and the advancement of women in the workplace. The Professional BusinessWomen of California (PBWC) has again selected SGI to receive the 2nd annual PBWC Pacesetter Award, which honors the top 25 San Francisco Bay Area companies that embody the mission of PBWC and that work to advance women on an ongoing basis. SGI is also pleased to announce that the YWCA of Santa Clara Valley, which honored 50 outstanding executive women from Silicon Valley at its 20th annual Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) Awards, has, for the fourth consecutive year, selected SGI executives as recipients. The TWIN award winners are Ann Johnson, director of applications engineering and benchmarking, and Joan Roy, director of marketing. "SGI is honored to be named once again as one of the top 25 companies for women in the Bay Area by the Professional BusinessWomen of California," said Bob Bishop, chairman and CEO, SGI. "These awards are significant recognition of the critical contributions that key women executives have made, and reinforces SGI's focus on attracting the best of the best, to achieve its technical and creative mission." The PBWC Pacesetter Awards On Tuesday, May 4, during the 15th Annual PBWC Conference at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, State Senator Jackie Speier presented the 2nd Annual PBWC Pacesetter Awards to Bay Area companies that exemplify the PBWC mission. The 25 top-ranking companies were honored during a keynote luncheon session featuring Myrtle Potter, executive vice president, Commercial Operations and COO, Genentech, and Sallie Krawcheck, CEO, Smith Barney. SGI's vice president, corporate controller; Kathy Lanterman (a 2003 YWCA TWIN award-winner) accepted the PBWC Pacesetter award on SGI's behalf. The PBWC Pacesetter Award winners were selected from 57 of the largest public companies from nine Bay Area counties that promote women into the highest ranks of their organizations and encourage women to take leadership roles on an ongoing basis. The criteria used in determining this year's Pacesetter Award winners are: percentage of women executives defined as vice president or equivalent and above; percentage of women corporate officers; percentage of women directors on the board; percentage of women employees; and development and continuing support of programs that benefit women in the workplace. "As the leading organization in California supporting the advancement of women, PBWC feels it is necessary to continue to honor those Bay Area companies that recognize the value of their female employees and that embody the mission and values of our organization," said Jackie McNab, PBWC President. TWIN Award For 20 years the YWCA Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) Program has honored women who exemplify excellence in executive level positions and the companies who employ these women. A maximum of the top 50 women who best meet the outlined criteria were chosen by a group of former TWIN Honorees and prominent industry leaders. The selected women were honored, along with their employer, at an awards and fundraising dinner on May 4, 2004, at the San Jose Fairmont Hotel. "The YWCA TWIN Awards honor successful women executives throughout the U.S. for their outstanding achievements," said Keri Procunier McLain, chief executive officer of the YWCA in Santa Clara Valley. "The awards are also an excellent way for an organization to be recognized for providing career opportunities for women in business and leadership in the community." The two SGI women executives chosen for this year's TWIN awards are consistent achievers and leaders that exemplify SGI's workforce diversity. -- Ann K. LaGrone Johnson, director of Applications Engineering and Benchmarking, holds a B.S. Computer Science, from Louisiana State University (LSU), as well as completing the Artificial Intelligence Certificate Program from UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles). Johnson leads a technical team of applications domain experts who are distributed across several countries. 2003 was a key transition year for SGI as the company transformed its product line to embrace new open standards in areas such as processors, visualization hardware, and operating systems. Johnson's role is to set direction of the applications engineering and benchmarking functions to support SGI's strategic direction, and engage at a technical level with partners and independent software vendors (ISVs). -- Joan E. Roy, director of marketing, holds a B.S. in Mathematics and Computational Sciences from Stanford University and an MBA in Business Administration from Harvard. Roy drives the worldwide product forecasting process, bridging the field sales, product marketing and manufacturing organizations. In addition to managing the technical team that develops and manages the product configuration software for SGI's field sales organizations, Roy leads the Sales Development team, managing the logistics of large and strategic deals that exceed the scope of the normal sales process. Twenty years ago, the TWIN Awards program was established in Santa Clara Valley to pay tribute to women in industry. The participants represent a cross-section of companies in the Valley including technology, defense, communications, publishing, construction and health care, among others.
