Implications of HP acquisition of Autonomy

Last week’s announcement by HP of its intention to purchase Autonomy will provide the company with an opportunity to strengthen their place in cloud-based data management solutions marketplace and combine it with their existing focus on Private Cloud.

According to Dick Csaplar, Senior Research Analyst, for the Aberdeen Group IT Infrastructure, Virtualization and Storage research practice:

“HP's purchase of Autonomy strengthens its presence in one of the highest growth and highest value markets in IT - managing, protecting and analyzing data.  In Aberdeen research we consistently find that dealing with the explosion of data is one of the top pressures on IT management, with reported data growth rates as high as 60% per year.  To get maximum value you have to turn data into knowledge.  Autonomy's product offerings of eDiscovery, archiving, and knowledge extraction, as well as the capabilities of handling structured as well as unstructured data and rich media (video, voice and speech) will allow HP to show their customers how to find the jewels among their terabytes of data.  Additionally, HP needs to extend its focus from the private datacenters into the Public Cloud.  This acquisition gives them a place in that market as Cloud-based storage, disaster recovery, eDiscovery and archiving become more widely consumed high-value services.”
