Leading Research Firm Names Oracle the Leader in Worldwide Embedded Database Management Systems
Oracle has announced that it has been named the leading embedded database management systems (DBMS) vendor for the third consecutive year based on 2009 embedded DBMS software revenues by leading market research firm IDC, in its report, “Worldwide Embedded DBMS 2010-2014 Forecast and 2009 Vendor Shares.”
IDC defines embedded DBMSs as those sold to Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) or hardware device partners to be used as components within larger software or hardware products developed by the partner.
IDC also notes that embedded DBMSs vary widely based on the applications they support. For example, some applications require a small footprint; others focus on speed or scalability, and some require broad support for many data types.

Oracle Leading Provider of World-Class Embeddable Database Products
To support the specific application requirements of developers and partners, Oracle offers a broad selection of world-class embeddable database products including:
- Oracle Database: delivers advanced relational database features in an embeddable package.
- Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database: delivers SQL transactions in microseconds to accelerate real-time and customer-facing applications where fast response times are essential.
- Oracle Berkeley DB: a small footprint, high performance embeddable open source database for developers of mobile devices/appliances and infrastructure with the choice of SQL, Key/Value, XML/XQuery or Java Object storage for their data model.
- MySQL Server: a full-featured, zero-administration open source relational database that more than 2,000 ISVs, OEMs, and OEMs rely on to make their products more competitive, bring them to market faster, and lower their cost of goods sold.
- MySQL Cluster: an open source real-time transactional relational database combining high availability with low total cost of ownership.
Requiring virtually no human administration, embedded databases are used by developers building products which have demanding requirements for data storage and run from edge and mobile devices to the datacenter. These partners are in industries such as communications, financial services, utilities and high technology.
Supporting Quotes
“Oracle has again extended its lead in the Embedded Database market,” said Judson Althoff, Oracle Senior Vice President, Worldwide Alliances & Channels and Embedded Sales. “With an unrivalled range of world-class embedded databases, Oracle is able to support the many different types of applications and hardware products that need to run unattended and manage their own data in a self-contained manner. We are committed to meeting these diverse requirements while also helping partners and developers lower implementation, licensing, hardware and administration costs.”
“Users demand that embedded database management systems deliver immediate business value,” said Carl Olofson, Research Vice President IDC. “The self-managing capabilities of Oracle's embedded databases meet the needs of ISV partners. Oracle has been the leader in vendor share for the last three years (2007-2009) and continues to grow faster than the market as a whole.”
