Sun Microsystems Increases Cross Platform Support Within Sun One
SANTA CLARA, CA -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced plans to provide a new Linux version of the iPlanet(TM) Application Server software, a move that underscores its continued commitment to cross platform support across the Sun(TM) Open Net Environment (Sun ONE), Sun's vision, architecture, platform and expertise for developing and deploying services on demand. Already supporting popular platforms such as Solaris(TM) Operating Environment (OE), Windows, IBM AIX, HP-UX and OS/390, Sun is now expanding its Linux support beyond existing versions of the iPlanet(TM) Web Server for content generation, iPlanet(TM) Message Queue for integration and Forte(TM) for Java(TM) tools to include the iPlanet Application Server for a complete development environment on Linux.
As part of its overall vision of delivering an open, integrateable architecture that enables customers to leverage existing investments and improve their return on assets, Sun will increase support of the open source operating system, which during 2000 represented more than a quarter of server operating environment new license shipments, according to IDC, in an updated release of the iPlanet Application Server later this year. (IDC, 2001, Worldwide Operating Environments Market Forecast and Analysis Summary, 2001-2005.) This will help to improve developer productivity and provide customers with more flexibility in deploying services on demand by not locking them into a single platform.
``Over the past year, we have seen increased demand among our customer base for Linux support. While most customers are continuing to deploy on the Solaris OE platform, they are developing on multiple platforms and we are committed to providing the robust, open foundation they need to build applications and services on demand,'' said Wes Wasson, vice president of iPlanet product marketing at Sun Microsystems. ``Coupled with the Forte(TM) For Java(TM) Enterprise Edition, Sun will soon offer open source developers a compelling and comprehensive end-to-end Linux development environment that enables developers to easily build, test and debug robust services on demand and J2EE(TM) applications.''
