Coaches and statisticians at the high school and AAU levels now can use their iPads to track and report their teams' game data in real time with software developed by a Purdue Research Park-based firm.
DelMar Information Technologies LLC on Tuesday (Oct. 11) launched Swoosh! for iPad 1.0 and Swoosh! for Desktop 2.0 to simplify the process of recording game statistics for teams without dedicated statisticians.
"Tracking game statistics on paper or in an electronic spreadsheet can be difficult for a single person. Creating reports from those statistics is time-intensive, which means the reports may not be available for coaches to read during halftime so they can change their game plan," said Mikel Berger, software developer at DelMar Information Technologies. "Swoosh! for iPad allows a person to use a touch screen not only to track and accumulate data in real time, but also to create shot charts and reports quickly for coaches."
James Simon, coach of Team Atlanta Basketball, said other coaches have noticed how he uses Swoosh! during games.
"There definitely was an elevated level of respect given to me and the program by other coaches who coach AAU and travel basketball," he said. "When they saw me using the program during the games, they initially were curious, but that quickly turned to envy when they saw what the program was capable of doing."
Joe Scott, boys' basketball coach in London, Ontario, Canada, said Swoosh! has positively impacted the team he coaches.
"I coach more than one team, and my communication is much better with parents and players with the team where we use Swoosh!" he said. "The degrees of success I have with each team is directly related to having materials so I can demonstrate what happened on the floor statistically and interpret that information."
Swoosh! 2.0 includes new functionality so tempo-free statistics can be calculated and reported at the end of a game or over the course of a season.
"Team statistics are affected by an opponent's style of play. There are more opportunities for points, rebounds, assists, turnovers and other statistics if the opponent plays at a faster tempo, and fewer opportunities at a slower tempo," Berger said. "Swoosh! 2.0 creates statistics like percentage of rebounds available, assists and turnovers per 100 possessions, and effective field goal percentage. These reports help coaches determine players' effectiveness and efficiency over the course of a game."
Brady Days, boys' varsity basketball coach at Southwestern High School in Shelbyville, Ind., said analyzing tempo-free statistics provides a better end result for individual players.
"These new types of statistics put a whole new emphasis on the player's productivity," he said. "It's not a vague number anymore and allows us to compare players across positions and games more accurately."
