OpenSFS Announces Collaborative Effort to Support Lustre 2.1 Community Distribution
- Category: SCIENCE
Open Scalable File Systems, Inc. (OpenSFS), a technical organization focused on high-end, open-source file system technologies, today announced plans to collaborate with Whamcloud and the broader Lustre community on version 2.1 of the Lustre file system. In a strong demonstration of unity and resolve, major proponents of the Lustre user community have joined in this effort to ensure the availability and open-source status of the software.
Showing initiative and leadership in the wake of a changing Lustre business environment, Whamcloud and OpenSFS (whose current participants include Cray Inc., Data Direct Networks, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Indiana University, and Whamcloud) will work to complete the Lustre 2.1 testing cycle and release. This effort is explicitly to support the Lustre community.
“We believe this announcement reinforces the fact that Lustre will continue to be a stable production platform supporting high-performance computing installations and high-performance wide-area network file system requirements,” said Norman Morse, president of OpenSFS. “As a community, we will further stabilize the existing system while continuing the development work that is necessary for moving toward the file system software that will be demanded by next-generation systems.”
Brent Gorda, president and CEO of Whamcloud, Inc., added: “Interest and support continues to build around Lustre. Whamcloud is encouraged to see OpenSFS supporting the community in this manner. We see this as both uniting activities that will help the community move forward and at the same time providing valuable resources for Lustre developers and users. We look forward to collaborating with OpenSFS.”
The entire Lustre community is welcome to support the release of Lustre 2.1 and future community versions of the Lustre file system. Interested parties are invited to contact any of the announcing organizations for further information about the projects underway or for further information about joining this effort.
